The S&P 500🤡 and Nasdaq Composite rose Monday as the U.S. equities market rebounded from a sharp sell-off at the end of last week.ꦇ

The S&P 500 and Nasdaq gained 0.4% and 0.6%, respectively, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 0.1%. Stocks were coming off their worst weekly performance since ea♉rly September, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite losing 2.1% and 3.2%, respectively, last week as the post-election rally that had boosted stocks to record highs lost steam.

Shares of Tesla (TSLA) finished 5.6% higher after rising more than 8% early in Monday's session following a Bloomberg report that President-elect Donald Trump's transition team is planning a 澳洲幸运5官方开奖𝔍结果体彩网:federal framework for fully self-driving vehicles, as investors bet on easier rul✅es for the company's robotaxi. The stock has now gained 35% since election day as investors expect the EV maker to reap significant benefits from CEO Elon Musk's close relationship with the president-elect.

Shares of AI investor favorite Nvidia (NVDA), which will release its highly anticipated earnings report on Wednesday, fell 1.3% after The Information 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:reported over the weekend🐻 that the company's new Blackwell chips have faced overheating issues.

Other mega-cap tech stocks were mostly higher, with Apple (AAPL), Microsoft (MSFT), Alphabet (GOOGL) and Meta Platforms (META) all gaining ground while Amazon (AMZN) was down slightly. Apple has once again ov🐠ertaken Nvidia as th⛄e world's most valuable company by market capitalization.

Among other noteworthy movers, Super Micro Computer (SMCI) shares jumped 16%, leading S&P 500 and Nasdaq gainers, amid hopes that the beleaguered server maker 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:would submit a plan for its de𝓡layed annual report that could help the company avoid a Naꦆsdaq delisting.

The yield on 10-year Treasurys, which is sensitive to expectations around interest rates, was little changed at around 4.41%, after rising as high as 4.49% earlier in the day. The yield has risen in recent weeks as investors have adjusted their expectations on how aggressive the Federal Reserve will be as it cuts interest rates. Last week, Fed Chair Jerome Powell said that the central bank isn't in a hurry to cut rates as inflation is on a bumpy path toward the Fed's target.

Bitcoin 👍was trading at around $91,500, up from below $90,000 earlier Monday. The cryptocurrency hit record highs above $93,000 last week amid investor optimism ♋that the Trump administration and a crypto-friendly Congress will implement measures that benefit the asset class.

Gold futures were up nearly 2% to around $2,615 an ounce. The precious metal, which hit record highs above $2,800 earlier this month, has lost ground as the U.S. dollar has strengthened since the presidential election.

Biggest S&P 500 Movers on Monday

November 18, 2024 05:39 PM EST

Advancers

  • Super Micro Computer (SMCI) shares surged 15.9%, notching Monday's top performance in the S&P 500, following reports that the server and data storage provider is 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:prepared to submit a plan that will avoid the delisting of its stock from the Nasdaq. Supermicro shares have been under pressure since the company delayed the filing of its annual report amid accusations of accounting irregularities, jeopardizing its compliance with the exchange's reporting requirements.
  • Shares of Henry Schein (HSIC), which distributes medical and dental supplies to health care providers, jumped 7.5%. The gains came after reports that activist investor Ananym Capital Management is encouraging Henry Schein to pursue numerous changes that could boost its stock price, including reshuffling its board of directors, improving succession plans, cutting costs, and evaluating a potential sale of its medical distribution business.
  • Analysts at HSBC upgraded Moderna (MRNA) stock to "buy" from "hold," indicating they view shares of the biotech firm as undervalued. Moderna shares popped 7.2% higher, clawing back a portion of the losses posted last week amid concerns about the outlook for vaccines under the incoming presidential administration.
  • CVS Health (CVS) announced that it will add four new members to its board of directors in a deal with 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:activist investor Glenview Capital. Glenview amassed a significant position in the drugstore operator and has been pushing for changes to boost value creation. CVS shares added 5.4% on Monday.

Decliners

  • Amentum (AMTM) shares plummeted 9.6% on Monday, falling the most of any S&P 500 stock. The provider of technology and engineering solutions to the U.S. government faces integration risks following its merger with a pair of divisions spun out from Jacobs Solutions (J), which closed in September.
  • Shares of Palantir Technologies (PLTR) fell 6.9%, giving back a portion of the robust gains posted since the analytics software firm beat quarterly 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:sales and profit expectations in a report released Nov. 4. Monday's reversal occurred after a regulatory filing revealed that Palantir CEO Alex Karp sold 4.5 million shares of the stock, raising concerns about management's confidence in the company's upcoming performance.

  • Uber Technologies (UBER) shares fell 5.4% following reports that President-Elect Donald Trump could relax regulations related to self-driving cars during his second term. The prospect of establishing a federal framework for autonomous vehicles bodes well for Tesla's (TSLA) plans to launch a robotaxi network that would compete with Uber's ride-hailing business. Shares of fellow ride-sharing platform Lyft (LYFT) slipped 4.5% on Monday, while Tesla 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:shares traded 5.6% higher.

November 18, 2024 02:17 PM EST

Netflix (NFLX) shares rose to a record high on Monday after the streaming giant's  broadcast of a highly anticipated fight between YouTube influencer-turned-boxer Jake Paul and boxing legend Mike Tyson reached a reco♊rd 60 million households on Friday night.

The stock was up 2.5% in mid-afternoon trading at around $845, as investors looked past the technical glitches that many viewers experienced during the boxing match.

Since breaking out above the top trendline of an 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:ascending triangle pattern following the company’s better-than-expected quarterly results last month, Netflix shares have continued to trend sharply higher. However, the 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:relative strength index (RSI) turned downward on Friday, indicating slowing bullish price momentum.

A bars pattern, which takes the stock’s trending period from January to April and repositions it from the breakout of an ascending tria꧅ngle last month, forecasts an upside target o🌳f around $870.

Get Ready for a Big Finale to Earnings Season

November 18, 2024 12:16 PM EST

Earnings season is almost dﷺone—but a big finale is expected this week.

More than 90% of reports from S&P 500 companies are in, according to a Monday note from Oppenheimer, which said third-quarter profits are up 6.8% year-over💙-year—with eight of the benchmark index’s 11 sectors reporting rising earnings—o💧n the back of 5% revenue growth.

Those numbers are a bit higher than FactSet’s “blended” figure, which combines reported results with estimates for those yet 𓆉to announce; as of Friday, those were at 5.4% for profits and 5.5% for revenue.

Still, some of the biggest events 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:on the calendar remain ahead. Retailers Walmart (WMT) and Lowe’s (LOW) are set to deliver results Tuesday, while Target (TGT) and TJX (TJX) are expected to deliver their numbers a day later. Taken together, the results—and any updates to the companies’ outlooks—could offer fresh perspective on the 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:state of the consumer ahead of Black Friday.

The main event, however, may come Wednesday after the bell, when chip giant Nvidia (NVDA) is set 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:to report results. Big Tech broadly has so far exceeded Wall Street’s earni𝔉ngs growth expectations in the third-quarter, UBS strategist 🌺Jonathan Golub noted last week.

The last of the 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:Magnificent Seven tech giants to report, Nvidia—one of the best-performing stocks in the S&P 500 this year—is expected to both deliver big revenue growth and illustrate the state of ongoing demand for the technology underpinning 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:artificial intelligence

Nvidia is “the most dominant stock in the market,” Bank of America analysts wrote in a Sunday note, saying it is responsible for a fifth of the S&P 500's return over the past 12 months. “With the market 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:taking a breather last week following the election rally, we beli༺eve✱ Nvidia earnings can dictate the near-term direction of the market.”

Nvidia (NVDA) shares fell Monday as reports, citing The Information, said that its next-generation 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:artificial intelligence (AI) Blackwell ch🦩ips have faced problems with accompanying servers that overheat.

Nvidia’s Blackwell graphics processing units reportedly overheat when connected in server racks designed to hold up to 72 chips. The chipmaker has asked its suppliers to change the design of the racks several times to resolve overheating problems,ꦏ with some customers worried they won’t have enough time to get new data centers u🍨p and running, according to reports.

"NVIDIA GB200 systems are the most advanced computers ever created. Integrating them into a diverse range of data center environments requires co-engineering with our customers,” an Nvidia spokesperson said in a statement to Investopedia.  “While our customers race to be first to market, NVIDIA is working with leading CSPs (cloud service providers) as an integral part of our engineering team and process. The engineering iterations are normal and expected."

Citing a person familiar with the situation, Barron's 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:reported Friday that the server manufacturer expects to be able to meet the ဣdeadline set by the Nasda🍸q by submitting a plan by Monday.

The gains come after the stock took a hit in recent months from concerns about the company's stock being delisted after it delayed filing its annual report in August. The company 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:said it received a letter from the Nasdaq on Sept. 17 informing𝔍 Supermicro of a 60-day deadline to file the late report, with a weekend deadline leaving Monday the effective date.

Earlier this month, the company said it "remains unable at this time to predict" when it would file the delayed annual report. 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:Last week, Supermicro said its official first-quarter results would also be delayed, as it hires a new auditor to review its results after accounting firm EY resigned.

EY's resignation followed months of speculation about Supermicro's accounting after the annual report was delayed, and a report from 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:short seller Hindenburg Research 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:accused it of "accounting manipulation" and other violations.♏

Tesla Jumps on Trump Team Plans to Ease Self-Driving Rules

November 18, 2024 09:02 AM EST

Shares of Tesla (TSLA) moved higher in premarket trading Monday following a report that President-elect Donald Trump's transition team is planning a 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:federal framework for fully self-📖driving v🐬ehicles, as investors bet on easier rules for the company's robo🐼taxi.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who is part of Trump’s 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:inner circle, benefits under such a frౠamework as he has made the robotaxi, a vehicle that will be able to drive itself without human supervision, a key focus of the EV 🉐maker’s future.

According to Bloomberg, Trump’s transition team members have told advisers they plan to make a federal framework for fully self-driv🅰ing vehicles one of the Transportation Department’s priorities.

At the moment, companies looking to sell vehicles without steering wheels or foot pedals en masse, something Tesla is planning, faꦓce significant regulatory hurdles, the report said. Present U.S. rules also pose big obstacles for Tesla’s plans for a robotaxi, including a cap that limits their deployment, the report added.

Wedbush analysts reiterated their outperform call on the EV maker, saying a federal framework would be "bullish for Tesla" and a "huge step forward in easing US rules for self-driving cars."

Wedbush, which has a 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:$400 price target on the EV maker, said last week that Tesla, which is less reliant on credits than smaller upstarts, could even benefit from less government support for EVs, Investors expect a Trump presidency to 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:roll back EV credits given under the Biden administration.

Tesla shares𒅌, which have gained more than 30% since election day, were up 6% in recent premarket tradingꦡ.
