Key Takeaways
- Meta Platforms (META) could soon offer ad-free subscription plans for Facebook and Instagram users in Europe as it seeks to comply with European Union (EU) privacy regulations.
- The move comes as Meta faces more than $1.7 billion in Eurozone fines over violations of the E.U.'s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
- Ad-free subscriptions to Instagram and Facebook will likely cost 10 euros per month, more than a basic Netflix plan but slightly less than an ad-free YouTube or Spotify subscription.
- Almost all of Meta's revenue comes from advertising, the company's second-quarter earnings released in July showed.
Meta Platforms (META) could soon introducꦺe ad-free subscription plans for Facebook and Instagram for European users, in a possible bid to satisfy European Un🦩ion privacy regulations.
Two sources told Reuters Tuesday that the subscription plans would roll out in the coming months and that multiple price points have been discussed. The company considers 10 euros per month (roughly $10.49) the "most feasible" price, one source said.
The move comes after 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:Meta was fined 390 million euros (about $411 million) in January 2023 for violating the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the European Union's landmark privacy law. Meta was hit with an even bigger fine of $1.3 billion in May, also for violations of GDPR. The tech giant has vowed to appeal both cases.
The proposed 10-euro plan would make an Instagram or Facebook subscription more expensive than a basic Netflix (NFLX) subscription (7.99 euros per month) and slightly cheaper than ad-free subscriptions for Spotify Technology (SPOT), which costs 11 euros. Alphabet (GOOGL) subsidiary YouTube costs 12 euros a month.
But mobile app users could wind up paying even more, thanks to 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:app store commissions charged by Google and Apple (AAPL). With those fees, the monthly price of a Metaﷺ subscription would jump to around 13 euros, or 156 euros per year.
Even at the lower price point proposed for Facebook and Instagram in Europe, 120 euros a year isn't cheap. However, subscription revenue might not be the company's primary goal. Instead, Meta appears to be betting that most users will opt for the unpaid, ad-supported experience they already know, allowing the firm to continue using personalized ads without violating Eurozone regulations.
Advertising made up 98% of revenue when Meta released 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:second-quarter earnings for the year in July.
