One of this week’s highest-profile earnings reports came in weaker than Wall Street had anticipated, but the company's high-profile CEO delivered some news that lifted investor spirits.

We’re talking about EV maker Tesla (TSLA), which posted steep declines on the top and bottom lines in the first quarter as its automotive revenue slid 20% from a year earlier. But CEO Elon Musk pledged to 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:spend more time at Tesla, while saying that plans for a cheaper model and full꧋y self-driving vehicles remain on track. Tesla shares were up more than 5% in after-hours trading.

The stock has been under pressure for much of 2025, pushed lower by economic uncertainty, indicators of weakness in the company's core auto business, and questions about whether Musk is 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网ജ:devoting enough time to the company alongside his other corporatꦏe and governmental commitments.

The company makes cars, sure. But it also seeks to be a leader in autonomous mobility, robotics and artificial intelligence—sprawling ambitions bulls say should🌜 mean big upside for the stock. That hasn’t always been an easy sell in 2025, with the shares having lost more than a🍨 third of their value; in the last 52 weeks, they’ve both approached $500 and drifted below $150.

Meanwhile, Tesla was the first of the 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:Magnificent Seven companies to report this quarter. That means investors were not only eyeing the ♉results and conference call for clues on what’s next for Tesla, but for the tech trade broadly.

Musk Says Tesla Not Immune to Macro Trends Hurting Demand

April 22, 2025 07:04 PM EDT

“Tesla is not immune to sort of the macro demand for cars. ꦗSo when there is ecoꦐnomic uncertainty, people generally want to pause on buying during a major capital purchase, like a car,” Musk said.

The comments come amid concerns consumers 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:are scrapping plans to buy cars and make other big purchase꧒s amid worries about an economic downturn in the face of President Trump’s tariffs.

April 22, 2025 06:47 PM EDT

As Tesla wor♑ks to expand its presence in robotics and artificial intelligence, Musk said the company is making “good progress” on its Optimus humanoid robot, adding he expects it to scale faster than any product in the company’s history.

Musk said he expects to have thousands of the robots workin♚g in Tesla factories by the end of this year, and suggested the company could reach a million units by 2029.

Plans Remain for More Affordable Model, FSD Vehicle

April 22, 2025 06:39 PM EDT

Musk and other executives said in Tueꦉsday’s call that the EV maker remains on track to start producing more affordable vehicles in the first half of this year.

The comments contradict a recent report from Reuters, which cited people familiar with the matter who said the EV maker is likely to delay the release of the cheaper Tesla at least into the second half of this year.

A 🅰fully automated version of Tesla’s self-driving software will also likely be available sometime this year, Musk said. He said customers should be able to pay for a ride in an autonomous Tesla in Austin, Texas around th🦩e middle of this year, and said it could be available for personal use by the end of the year.

Musk Says He Will Give Trump Advice on Tariffs

April 22, 2025 06:02 PM EDT

The Tesla CEO said he believes lower t🐭ariffs are “generally a good idea for prosperity,” but that the decision is President Trump’s to make in the long run.

“I will weigh in with my advice with the President, which he will listen to my advice, but then it's up to him, of course, to make his decision,” Musk said during his introductory remarks on the earnings call.

Tesla should be less affected by tariffs than most other automakers, Musk said, as the EV maker has worked to diversify its supply chain and position its manufacturing so parts ꦰare often going to facilities “at least located on the same continent.”

Musk Says Time With DOGE Will Decline Starting Next Month

April 22, 2025 05:54 PM EDT

Musk said at the start of Tuesday's earnings call that his time spent with the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency will decline starting next month.

The CEO said he expects to spend a day or two per week “on government matters for as long as the President would like me to do so, and as long as it is useful.”

He acknowledged that there has been “some blowback” to his work in the go♛vernment, but reiterated his belief that the department is succeeding in reducing wasteful spending in the government.

Tesla Shares Move Higher Ahead of Conference Call

April 22, 2025 05:32 PM EDT

Tesla’s 𝕴shares surged before the company’s latest earnings arrived𝔍. The after-hours move has been more muted as investors wait for Elon Musk to take the stage.

T🎶he shares rose nearly 5% in Tuesday’s regular trading, closing a bit below $238. In late action after the results arrived, they first seesawed, then stabilized; as of a few minutes before 5:30 p.m. ET, wh🐲en the company’s conference call was set to begin, they were up more than 3%.

Options markets indicate that investors are expecting the earnings to drive a substantial move in Tesla’s shar๊es. Maybe Musk’s words on the call will be enough to start that up.

More Affordable Teslas 'As Critical as Ever,' Company Says

April 22, 2025 05:10 PM EDT

Some Tesla watchers were looking for fresh details about plans for more affordable Teslas, and the company offered𒁃 some new༒s in its press release.

“Given economic uncertainty resulting from changing trade policy, more affordable opt🃏ions are as criticalﷺ as ever,” the company said.

Plans for “new vehicles,” which the company said includes more affordable ones, “👍remain on track for start of production in the first half of 2025.”

Te🌌sla said they’d be made on the company’s current manufacturing lines, which will mean “less coꦕst reduction than previously expected but enables us to prudently grow our vehicle volumes in a more capex efficient manner during uncertain times.”

More commen✱ts on the topic may be forꦐthcoming in the company’s conference call, set for 5:30 p.m. ET.

Tesla to Revisit 2025 Guidance Next Quarter

April 22, 2025 04:55 PM EDT

Tesla didn’t offer fresh𒈔 full-year guidance in its first-quarter earnings release, saying the company would do so next time around.

“While we are making prudent investments that will set up both our vehicle and energy businesses for growth, the rate of growth this year will depend on a variety of factors, including the rate of acceleration of our autonomy efforts, production ramp at our factories and the broader macroeconomic environment” the company wrote. “We will revisit our 2025 guidance in our Q2 update."

The company ♎in its last full-year report said it expected the auto business to return to growth this year.

Working to 'Stabilize the Business' Amid Trade Uncertainty

April 22, 2025 04:48 PM EDT

With US trade policy e♌volving quickly under President Donald Trump, Tesla is one of many companies looking to ꦛmitigate possible impacts.

“While the current tariff landscape will have a relatively larger impact on our Energy business compared to automotive, we are taking actions to stabilize the business in the medium to long-term and focus on maintaining its health,” Tesla said in written c👍omments.

“Uncertainty in the automotive and energy markets continues to increase as rapidly evolving trade policy adversely impacts the global supply chain and cost structure of Tesla and our peers. This dynamic, along with changing political sentiment, could have a meaningf꧋ul impact on demand for our products in the near-term.”

Quarter Was a 'Disaster,' Tesla Bull Ives Says

April 22, 2025 04:44 PM EDT

Wedbush analsyt Dan Ives on CNBC shortly after Tesla's results were released called Tesla's first quarter a "disaster."

Ives also reiterated his feeling that Tesla's stock performance will hinge on how long CEO Elon Musk stays in his role with the Trump administration. He said it would have a "dark downside" to Tesla stock if Musk instead recommits to his political involvements, as damage to Tesla's brand could continue to worsen.

"The most important thing on this (earnings) call, it's not numbers," Ives said. "It's Musk on the call committing, recommitting to Tesla as a CEO and ultimately saying that he is going to leave the Trump administration."

Results Short of Expectations on Top and Bottom Lines

April 22, 2025 04:35 PM EDT

The electric vehicle maker reported adjusted earnings of $0.27 per share on revenue of $19.34 billion, down from earnings of $0.45 per share on $21.3 billion in revenue a year ago, well below 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:analysts' forecasts compiled by Visible Alpha.

"Uncertainty in the automotive and energy markets continues to increase as rapidly evolving trade policy adversely impacts the global supply chain and cost structure of Tesla and our peers," the company said in Tuesday's release. "This dynamic, along with changing political sentiment, could have a meaningful impact on demand for our products in the near-term."

Revenue Falls, Gross Margins Slip

April 22, 2025 04:22 PM EDT

Tesla’s first-🍬quarter revenues fell year-over-year as itsꦬ key automative business took a hit.

Total revenue fell 9% to $19.3 billion; automotive🌞 revenue, which makes up the bulk of the total, was off 20% to about $14 billion, weighed down by both volume and lower average prices. Revenue in its other segments rose.

Total 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:gross margins, meanwhile, dro꧑pped to 16.3% from 17.4🍃% in the year-ago quarter.

Traders Pricing in a Big Move for Tesla Stock After Earnings

April 22, 2025 04:10 PM EDT

Options pricing suggests traders are expecting Tesla stock to move roughly 11% in either direction in the days after Tuesday's report. Based on Tuesday afternoon's share price of about $238, that would put Tesla stock between $212 and $264 on Friday.

A double-digit post-earnings move wouldn't be out of the ordinary for Tesla, one of the more volatile 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:mega-cap stocks. After its four most recent quarterly reports, the company has seen its stock move 12.3% on average. Shares soared nearly 22% in October when the company 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:beat earnings estimates and CEO Elon Musk said the company was "on track" to begin producing a model costing less than $30,000 this yea🦩r.

A lot has changed since October. President Donald Trump's tariffs could derail Musk's low-cost model plans. Trump's 25% duty on all foreign cars and car parts is expected to significantly 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:incr♌ease the co🌟st of all automobiles—even Tesla's, which are assജembled in the U.S. with some foreign parts.&ಞnbsp;

Musk may have to answer to investors concerned that his involvement with the White House is both distracting him from leading Tesla and damaging the brand. Tesla dealerships have become a regular target of anti-Trump protests, and international sales have plummeted amid 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:a global backlash to Musk's political interventions.

Tesla's first-quarter deliveries 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:fell short of analysts' estimates, which ha♒d already been lowered since ♛the start of the year.

Another Way to Trade Tesla Earnings: Counting Elon's Words

April 22, 2025 04:04 PM EDT

Looking for a way to trade Tuesday afternoon’s 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:Tesla earnings? You could bet on the stock making a big move—or you could try something a bit weirder: counting Elon Musk’s words.&nbs🍌p;

Prediction markets are offering wagers on a range of Tesla-related (TSLA) outcomes that have little to do with the numbers. At PolyMarket, you can bet on the number of times Musk, the company’s CEO, says certain things during the company’s conference call later today. Options range from “AI” (or “artificial intelligence”) to “MAGA” (or “Make America Great Again”).

The likelihood of the former happening was recently given as 97%, the highest expected odds in the platform’s list, meaning a successful $10 bet would get you $10.06. The latter acronym’s odds were recently 10%, meaning $10 would get you nearly $53. (You also can bet on words like “Trump,” “Mars,” and “澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:inflation.”)

Wall Street Has Been Betting Against Tesla Stock

April 22, 2025 03:51 PM EDT

Tesla (TSLA) stock was up Tuesday ahead of the EV maker’s quarterly earniℱngs report after the ꦬbell, but Wall Street’s betting against Musk & Co.

Short interest on Tesla’s stock has increased by 10 million shares, or about 15%, so far this year, according to a report Tuesday from🉐 Matthew Unterman, Managing Director of S3 Partners.

In terms of nominal value, Tesla is the third-most shorted stock in the S&P 500, with about $17.6 billion of shares sold short. Nvidia (NVDA) and Apple (AAPL) technically have more market value sold short—$24.6 billion and $22.2 billion, respectively—but they are, respectively, three and four times larger than Tesla.

With Tesla stock down about 40% from the start of the year, shorting Tesla stock has been a lucrative trade. Unterman estimates short sellers are sitting on mark-to-market profits in excess of $11.5 billion. For comparison, the next most-profitable bearish strategy—shorting Nvidia stock—has generated about $9.4 billion in profit.

“With short interest climbing and sentiment deteriorating, Tesla's post-earnings path hinges on results and guidance clarity,” writes Unterman. “A confirmed break above recent short interest resistance could suggest deepening bearish conviction, especially with analysts openly questioning leadership focus. Volatility is expected—direction depends on whether TSLA can counter rising pessimism.”

Watch for Updates on a Cheaper Tesla, BofA Says

April 22, 2025 03:45 PM EDT

Could we get an update on a new, cheaper, Tesla today?♑ Bank of America a♒nalysts think so.

“We expect the company to give an update regarding the low-cost vehicಌle that is now reportedly going to be delayed (former expectations were calling for it to be unveiled in 1H25),” the analysts wrote in a Tuesday note.

Reuters earlier this month reported that “a U.S-made, stripped-down” Model Y SUV, expected sometime early this year, has been pushed back. Reuters has also reported that Tesla paused shipments of parts from China for its Cybercab and semi trucks because of Trump administration tariffs.

What Morgan Stanley's Bullish Analyst is Watching for Today

April 22, 2025 03:41 PM EDT

Morgan Stanley’s Adam Jonas isn’t the biggest Tesla bull on Wall Street — but he’s up there, with a $410 price target on the shares t🐎hat is substa🌼ntially above Visible Alpha’s $310 mean. (Stifel analysts, at above $490, are the biggest bulls tracked by that service.)

In a published note, Jonas said the stock would likely trade in the wake of this afternoon’💃s scheduled quarterly results on investors’ impression of progress on themes including profit margins, cash burn, confidence in the company’s efforts to develop robotaxis and robots, and signs that CEO Elon Musk is paying enough attention to his corporate, as well as his political, responsibilities.

“We look for Elon Musk to continue to strike the tone of 2025 as a ‘bridge’ from the old Tesla (the world of steering-wheel-having💃 autos) to the new Tesla of multiple expressions of autonomy ranging from vehicles to humanoids and other new and underappreciated ‘modalities,’” Jonas wrote.

What Analysts Think of Tesla Stock Ahead of Earnings

April 22, 2025 03:38 PM EDT

Analysts tracked by Visible Alpha are split between 10 "buy" ratings, four "hold," and four "sell" ratings. Ahead of last quarter's report, the distribution was nine "buy," six "hold," and three "sell" ratings.

The mean price target, $310 per Visible Alpha data, represents a roughly 30% premium to where the stock is trading late Tuesday. That average target, however, is down about $52 from the average prior to last quarter's earnings release.

Tesla is expected to report a less than 1% decline in revenue to $21.1 billion, with adjusted 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:earnings per share (EPS) forecast to fall by nearly 8% year-over-year to $0.🌼41. The revenue estimate has been cut 17%, while the adjusted EPS consensus has fallen by over 40% since last quarter's report was released.

The company's deliveries and production numbers 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:fell short of estimates for the second 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:straight quarter when they were released earlier this month. The EV maker has also been the 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:center of protests and controversy regarding CEO Elon Musk's involvement in the Trump administration. Sales 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:have declined in several key markets so far this year.

Last week, Reuters reported that the company has paused shipments of parts from China for its semi trucks and Cybercab autonomous taxi because of the Trump administration's tariffs, potentially delaying production and release of the vehicles.

Tesla stock was 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:one of the worst performers in the S&P 500 in the first quarter. Analysts, including 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:those most bullish on the EV maker, 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:have cut estimates for deliveries and profits this year, along with price targets. Some have called for 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:Musk to step back from his political efforts to 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:focus on Tesla as the stock has slid.
