U.S. stocks fell Wednesday after inflation data came in hotter ♛than exp💛ected, raising questions about the outlook for interest rates this year.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.5%, while the S&P 500 shed 0.2%. The Nasdaq Composite finished the session less than 0.1% higher. The indexes were coming off a mixed session Tuesday in which the Dꦺow adv🍰anced and the Nasdaq ticked lower.

Inflation accelerated for a fourth consecutive month in January. The Consumer Price Index rose 3% in January, its biggest increase since June. Core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, accelerated to 3.3%. Th♓e data came shortly before Fed Chair Jerome Powell appeared before members of the House of Representatives, part of the central bank's biannual update to Congress.

Treasury yields soared on the hotter-than-expected inflation report. The 10-year Treasury yield, which is highly sensitive to expectations for inflation and Fed policy, leaped to 4.63% from 4.53% yesterday. Investors had already scaled back their expectations for interest rate cuts amid uncertainty about Trump's trade policies and the 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:effect tariffs could 🔴have on prices, but Wednesday's report amplifꦅied concerns about resurgent inflati꧒on.

Big tech stocks were mixed. Nvidia (NVDA), Microsoft (MSFT), Alphabet (GOOG), and Amazon (AMZN) were all down about 1%, while Meta Platforms (META), Broadcom (AVGO). and Apple (AAPL) rose. Tesla (TSLA), which slid☂ more than 6% yesterday, added more than 2%.

Shares of Super Micro Computer (SMCI) rose nearly 3% after the AI server maker reported 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果♚体彩网:underwhelming second-quarter results, but said it expected to submit a delayed regulatory filing in time to avoid being delisted by Nasdaq. CVS Health (CVS) stock soared 15% after 澳洲幸运5官方꧑开奖结果体彩网:topping re🐟venue and profit estimates.

Other stocks rising on earnings reports included Doordash (DASH), up 4%, and 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:AI lender Upstart Holdings (UPST), up 31%. Meanwhile, Lyft (LYFT) shares tumbled 7% on its 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:disappointing results, while Zillow Group (Z) slid 9% and data center infrastructure stock Vertiv Holdings (VRT) lost nearly 10%. Burger King parent 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:Restaurant Brands International (QSR) gave up early gains to close down 1%.

Bitcoin traded around $97,500 after rebounding from a CPI-driven nosedive. Gold futures, which 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:touched a record high of $2,965 an ounce earlier this week, traded around $2,925. West Texas Intermediate crude oil futures slid more than 2% to abo꧟ut $71.50☂ a barrel.

Top S&P 500 Movers on Wednesday

February 12, 2025 04:45 PM EST

Decliners:

  • Westinghouse Air Brake Technologies (WAB) shares dropped 9.1%, falling the most of any S&P 500 stock. The manufacturer of products for locomotives and railroad systems missed quarterly sales and profit forecasts. The company, commonly known as Wabtec, also issued lower-than-expected full-year earnings guidance, citing pressure on freight demand along with increased prices and borrowing costs.
  • Arista Networks (ANET) shares lost 6.2% following reports that the cloud networking firm's chief technology officer recently sold a significant stake in the company. Investors often view sales by company insiders as a possible warning signal about a stock's upcoming performance. Wednesday's downturn reversed a portion of strong gains posted by Arista stock over the past two weeks, boosted by expectations of robust demand for scalable cloud networking infrastructure.
  • Waters (WAT), which provides analytical instruments and software for scientific research laboratories, edged out fourth-quarter sales and profit expectations, but its first-quarter guidance came in below expectations. The company noted a negative impact from currency exchange as the strength of the U.S. dollar pressures its international revenue. Waters shares tumbled 5.8% on Wednesday.

Advancers:

  • The top performance in the S&P 500 Wednesday came from shares of CVS Health (CVS), which surged 14.9% after the pharmacy operator and health insurance provider 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:topped fourth-quarter sales and 🐽profit estimates. CEO David Joyner, who took the reigns of CVS amid a strategic reshuffling in October, noted strong growth in the pharmacy and consumer wellness business as the company navigates a challenging environment in the health care benefits segment.
  • Shares of Generac Holdings (GNRC) were 7.6% higher after the provider of portable, residential, and commercial generators outperformed profit expectations with its fourth-quarter results. The company noted that declining power quality and increasing prices, as well as the prevalence of extreme weather and power outages, contributed to strong demand.
  • Gilead Sciences (GILD) posted better-than-expected revenue and adjusted earnings per share for the fourth quarter, and shares of the biopharmaceutical company jumped 7.5%. During the earnings call, Gilead suggested that it expects the Food and Drug Administration to approve its antiretroviral drug lenacapavir as a pre-exposure prophylactic for HIV, with preparations underway for a launch in the middle of this year.

Alibaba Stock Clim✃bs to 2-Year High on Opt🌌imism About Reported Apple AI Partnership

February 12, 2025 04:17 PM EST

Shares of Alibaba Group (BABA) listed in the U.S. extended their rally into Wednesday amid reports that the Chinese tech and e-commerce giant is 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:partnering with Apple (AAPL) to create artificial intelligence features for Apple pr𒊎🐬oducts in China.

The Information on Tuesday and The Wall Street Journal early Wednesday reported that Apple has submitted AI features developed with Alibaba to Chinese regulators for approval, a process that could take several months.

Apple and Alibaba did not immediately respond to requ🍷ests for comment.

Analysts said that the partnership and rollout of AI features in China could help Apple's 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:slowing sales in China. Upgrades, a key driver of Apple device sales, 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:have been more common in regions where the AI features have launched, like the U.S. The deal could also allow Apple to access the data Alibaba has collected through its 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:e-commerce offerings to allow the AI products to be more personalized, Bloomberg reported.

Wednesday marks the fifth straight winning session for Alibaba's U.S.-listed shares. Jefferies analysts lifted their 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:price target to $150 from $144 on Wednesday, without yet mentioning or facto🌟ring in the reported Apple partnership in its research report.

JPMorgan analysts said Tuesday that they don't expect Apple to confirm the partnership until the features are ready to be launched, but said the rollout could mark "significant progress" for Apple in China and help boost sales of the iPhone 16, or the iPhone 17 the company is expected to announc💮e later this y🎶ear.

Shares 💯of Alibaba rose almost 5% on Wednesday to close at their highest level in more than♏ two years. The stock has gained more than 60% in the past year. Apple shares rose 1.8% Wednesday and have gained more than 25% over the last 12 months.

Kraft Heinz Drops as Q4 Sales, 2025 Outlook L💦ag Estimates

February 12, 2025 03:13 PM EST

Kraft Heinz (KHC) shares fell 3.5% intraday Wednesd✨ay as the food giant reported fourth-quarter sales and issued 2025 guidance that missed analysts' estimates.

The maker of Heinz ketchup and Kraft Mac & Cheese said fourth-quarter sales declined 4% year-over-year to $6.58 billion, falling short of Visible Alpha consensus. Adjusted 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:earnings per share (EPS) of 84 cents rose nearly 8% and surpassed forecasts.

澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:Kraft Heinz said that ♕"continued shifts in consumer behavior due to economic uncertainty"ಌ and a decline in its Lunchables-branded foods were to blame for the weaker sales.

In November, the company removed Lunchables prepackaged meal kits from schools, following heavy opposition from health advocates over adding processed foods to school-meal programs, according to the Associated Press. (Kraft Heinz told the AP that it had pulled Lunchables from schools because "demand did not meet our targets," and that the business impact was "negligible.")

CEO Carlos Abrams-Rivera called 2024 "a challenging year," noting that sales of $25.85 billion came in below the company's expectations.

Kraft Heinz said it expects 2025 organic sales to be between 2.5% lower and flat, and adjusted EPS between $2.63 and $2.74. Both missed analysts' estimates.

Kraft Heinz s☂hares are down by more than a fifth in the past 12 months.

Tesla, Palantir Among Top Gainers as Stocks Un🎉der Pressure

February 12, 2025 02:30 PM EST

Some big tech shares were holding up Wednesday afternoon as inflation data and questions about the path ahead for interest rates 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:weighed on U.S. stocks.

Tesla (TSLA), Intel (INTC), and Palantir (PLTR) were recently among the top gainers in the S&P 500, which was more broadly edging lower. The tech-focused Nasdaq Composite was ticking lower, but its retreat was less pronounced than th🌃at of the other leadꦉing indexes.

It's not exactly full-steam ahead for tech today, but there were a few standout names. Tesla, down substantially in 2025—CEO Elon Musk this week saw his estimated net worth drop 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:below $400 billion for the first time this year—was up 4%. Palantir, thꦡe y෴ear's best performer in the benchmark S&P 500, was up nearly as much.

Apple (AAPL) saw its shares edge higher following news of 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:an AI partnership with China's Alibaba (BABA), with the stock up more than 1%.ꦑ Intel was up some 6%, extending its year-to-date gains after a brutal 2024.

There were, undoubtedly, losers in big tech as investors worried that 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:stubborn inflation, as measured by the 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:Consumer Price Index, might mean the Fed could keep interest rates higher for longer. Nvidia (NVDA) was recently down more than 1.5%, and the PHLX Semiconductor Index (SOX) edged downward.

All but two of the S&P 500's 11 sectors were recently in retreat.

Lyft Stock Sinks on Disappointing Outlook

February 12, 2025 01:38 PM EST

Shares in Lyft (LYFT) tumbled Wednesday after the ride-hailing company projected first-quarter bookings that lagged estimates as a price war with rival Uber Technologies (UBER) persists.

The ride-hailing company said it expected first-quarter gross bookings of around $4.05 billion to $4.2 billion “amidst the recent pricing environment in the U.S. market.” That compared with consensus estimates from analysts polled by Visible Alpha before the results were release🍌d of $4.23 billion.

Uber also recently reported a current-quarter gross bookings outlook came in 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:mostly below analysts' estimates.

Lyft’s results come as the loss of its partnership with Delta Air Lines (DALlooms over the company this spring.

In a🦩 note Wednesday, JPMorgan analysts lowered their price target for Lyft to $16 from $19, saying that it believed Lyft “is facing an increasingly competitive rideshare landscape.” The analysts said they expect L𝓀yft results to be “pressured” through the first half of 2025 and the company would have to overcome the loss of the Delta partnership “which also calls into question the ability to grow GBs (gross bookings) in the mid-teens annually through 2027.”

Lyft reported mixed fourth-quarter results Tuesday, with revenue of $1.55 billion lagging estimates, while its adjusted 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:earnings per share (EPS) of 27 cents beat forecasts.

Lyft shares are down around 6% Wednesday afternoon but have gained about 9% in th🦄e past year.

February 12, 2025 11:37 AM EST

Price Levels T💦o Watch as Supermicro 𓃲Stock Rises on Q2 Update

February 12, 2025 11:00 AM EST

Super Micro Computer (SMCI) shares were up 4% in intraday trading Wednesday after the troubled server maker said it expects to submit its 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:delayed 2024 financial reports b♛y the Nasdaq’s Feb. 25 deadline to avoid being delisted.

It's been a wild ride for Supermicro stock, which lost nearly 10% during regular trading hours Tuesday and began after-hours trading in the red before 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:whipsawing. The company's shares have fallen around 6% in the last month but have 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:surged more than 35% in February&nbs🦹p;as of Tue🐬sday’s close in anticipation of this update. However, the stock has lost nearly half its value over the past year.

Supermicro shares broke out above the top trendline of a descending 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:broadening formation last Friday, potentially also forming an 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:inverse head and shoulders bottoming pattern in the process.

This image depicts the SMCI chart.
Source: TradingView.com.

While the 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:relative strength index (RSI) edged lower after yesterday’s fall in regular trading, the indicator still confirms bullish price momentum with a reading just below the 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:overbought threshold.

Let’s apply 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:technical analysis to identify important overhead areas where the shares could run into 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:resistance.

The first overhead area to track sits around the 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:psychological $50 level. This region on the chart could provide resistance near the inverse head and shoulders’ neckline, which also lies close to the downward-sloping 澳洲幸运5官方开奖结果体彩网:200-day moving average.

A decisive breakout above this price would confirm the pattern, which could propel a move to around $70. Investors may look to 🎐offload shares around this level near the February 2024 pullback low and late-April trough.

Follow-through buying could see the shares rally to the $96 level, an area that may provide resistance near a trendline that connects a series of peaks on the chart between Febr♊uary and July last year.🦄
